Module 1: How do We Learn? Theories of Multimedia Learning

Revisiting Theories of Multimedia Learning in EDCI 337

In Module One of EDCI 337, I was reintroduced to the theories of multimedia learning, including Active Processing, Dual Coding Theory, and Cognitive Load Theory. My background in neuroscience, psychology, and education had previously exposed me to these theories. Despite this familiarity, diving into more specific principles like the Signaling and Contiguity Principles was particularly enlightening. It was a exciting to finally have terminology for phenomena I’d recognized in multimedia learning, enriching my vocabulary and understanding.

Screencasting: A Versatile Tool in Learning

The module delved into screencasting and its applications. My appreciation for screencasting, already rooted in my educational, professional, and personal experiences, deepened through this exploration. The widespread use of screencasting across various disciplines, such as in project management training videos and educational content like Khan Academy’s organic chemistry lessons, highlighted its versatility and effectiveness in disseminating knowledge.

Putting Theory into Practice: My Screencasting Project

This module challenged me to apply my theoretical knowledge in a practical project: creating a screencast on a topic of my choice. I seized this opportunity to guide others through the website of UVic Women in Science (WIS), an advocacy group close to my heart. In this project, I applied my newfound theoretical insights, particularly focusing on managing cognitive load and delivering information effectively. I was mindful of not overwhelming viewers with excessive cursor movement or rapid speech.

Evolving the Screencast: Reflecting and Improving

The process of creating the screencast was a journey of reflection and evolution. Initially, I planned to omit voice-over to maintain anonymity. However, considering the Dual Coding Theory, I realized the value it could add and thus included it. Additionally, I introduced a cover page for a clear and focused start, avoiding an overstimulating introduction for the viewers.

Conclusion: A Fulfilling Learning Experience

Creating this screencast was as enjoyable as it was educational. I hope you find watching my short clip as enlightening and engaging as I found making it!

  • Hey Syd, loved the post! It was a great choice to base your screencast on a topic that interested you as it came through in your tone of voice which was engaging rather than monotone. Overall, great first blog post and I can’t wait to see what’s to come!

  • Hi! I read your blog, and the summary is fantastic! It’s also very comprehensive. You’ve done an excellent job of organizing the content from Module 1 released by the teacher and summarizing it in your blog. This makes it easy for me to understand and grasp the information you’ve presented. I also watched your video! Your speaking order is very clear, and it would be even better if you could add subtitles to your video!
